Marriage customs around the world are as varied as the countries themselves. While some traditions are similar, others could not be more different. In Norway, for example, brides wear crowns to deflect evil spirits.

 In India, brides often get mehndi (henna tattoos) to celebrate their impending nuptials. Japanese couples may share sake during their wedding ceremony to symbolize their union. No matter what the specific tradition may be, each one is a beautiful representation of the culture it comes from.

United States

Although Christian weddings in the Arab World bear similarities to Western weddings, Muslim weddings in the Arab world have many unique customs. One of these is the blackening of the bride. The bride and groom are covered in a black substance, usually soot or ash, and then they are paraded through the streets with their parents. 

This tradition is said to ward off evil spirits and protect the happy couple. Another interesting custom is the exchange of sake. Instead of exchanging wedding vows, the bride and groom – and parents too – sip sake, three times each, from three different-sized cups. This is said to strengthen their bond and bring them good luck in their marriage. These are just two of the many fascinating marriage customs from around the world.

Europe

Marriage customs around the world vary depending on the culture and traditions of the people. In Europe, there are many different traditions that are still practiced today. From the bride tossing her bouquet to wearing something old, new, borrowed, and blue, these customs are still so popular today. Bride-Napping is a fun tradition practiced in Romania and several other European countries. 

Days before the wedding, guests work together to kidnap the bride and take her to a secret location. The groom then has to find her and bring her back to the wedding. After the vows a flower band, rope or rosary known as a lazo would be wrapped around the neck of the couple to symbolize the eternity of their love.

 In Sweden, the bride and groom kiss other people (as opposed to just each other) on their wedding day. It's normal in this culture for guests to line up and kiss the newlyweds on their cheek as they walk down the aisle. Romanian weddings often include traditions

Asia

Marriage customs around the world vary based on the country you are in. Most Asian countries have very different marriage customs than what is common in America. In China, it is common for the groom to spend the night with the bride's family before the wedding. This is a way for the two families to get to know each other better and to start the relationship off on a good foot.

 The bride and groom may also complete four or seven laps around a fire during their wedding ceremony. This is said to represent the journey that they will take together as a married couple. In South Korea, some grooms are subjected to a special ritual before they can leave with their new bride.

 They must first prove that they are able to take care of their wife by performing tasks such as carrying her over a threshold or putting her shoes on for her. These unique marriage customs are just a few examples of how different weddings can be around the world.

Africa

The wedding is an exceptionally respected tradition within Africa due to their deeply rooted appreciation for the notion of family. Many African communities kidnap the bride! A popular African wedding tradition especially in West Africa is to spray money on the bride while she dances during the wedding ceremony.

West African cultures have rituals where the bride feeds the couple. There's also a formal request ceremony where the groom asks for the bride's hand in marriage from her father. In most African cultures, they expect the groom's family to pay a bride price. But, in Zulu culture, the wedding (or umabo) procedures are very different. In some cultures, it is customary for the bride and groom to exchange rings during the ceremony, while in others they may exchange them after the ceremony has ended.
